Achievement GET! Now SLEEP!!

Hey, just a quick post to help alleviate my mild fears on a few things.
1. I have managed to get half of my workload out of the way for this Easter break (as planned) so that means my annotated bibliography is written (though not necessarily complete as I'll still have to look it over when my mental faculties have returned sufficiently to be a good judge). Yes, I am still awake at almost midnight having finally finished said bibliography, which brings me to point two.
2. I used to think I couldn't keep working past maybe 9pm - looks like I was wrong! But there is still no way I could pull an all-nighter to get work done.....at least not yet.
Anyway I've had a productive day overall what with sorting my Student Finance application, dusting my room (which frankly has not seen a duster since maybe Christmas....or before), and making a stellar Fish Pie (yum).
But yes, I need to be up early tomorrow so to bed with me, pronto!

No more impressive than a Puddle of Mudd

Well I'm finally home for my Easter Holidays, here in good ole Kent! It appears, however, that I have not left the bad weather behind and Storm Katie (as they have named 'her') has followed me home. But more on that later as I would like to detail my Saturday first.
It was indeed a busy day what with getting my hands on some foreign monies, doing my laundry, vacuuming my room, writing my 300-word intro, getting some dinner, then happy-dancing round my room for a bit before getting ready for the Puddle of Mudd gig (which I shall briefly outline her, though I intend to be a little more in-depth on my music blog).
The venue itself was quite small, surprisingly, but I didn't have long to wait for The Fallen State to appear and begin their set. There was some low-level dancing happening right in front of the stage, courtesy of a girl with pink hair (who stole the musicians' attention all night), but it was never anything crazy - at least not until later. Their specific type of sound was hard to pin down: a little bit Rise Against, a little bit Young Guns (their Facebook page lists their favourite bands as including Shinedown and Daughtry which I can see). However I ended up being the fortunate [sole] winner of a free t-shirt and EP after they asked us all to tag ourselves in a group shot taken after their set - and some very friendly lads they are too.
The second support band was Unzucht, all the way from Germany and commanding a rather eerie but spellbinding presence, a little like Rammstein but more melodic (though no less heavy). The eerie came courtesy of the band's two additional 'atmospheric' vocalists, I'd like to call them, but it was indeed the lead vocalist who stole my eyes, like a German Ville Valo with his charisma, curly hair (and beanie). I don't think Ville would have had the balls to crowdsurf though - which this guy did!
Finally, having reluctantly let Unzucht go, Puddle of Mudd made their way on stage, and from the word 'go', I could tell this wasn't going to end well as frontman Wes Scantlin appeared drunk/high, disappearing mid-set, drinking on-stage (which included passing an almost empty bottle of Southern Comfort into the audience...) and making virtually no sense apart from when he was singing (itself a miracle that he even remembered the words). Towards the end, they disappeared for a long while after microphone issues before Wes stumbled back on and finished the show, but it was a genuine wash-out (and not the first on their tour either - look - I'm not sure why they didn't just cancel the tour...)
To add further insult, my hopes of catching a cab home were dashed as no cabs were 'in my area' for 40 minutes! Needles to say, I observed the steadily worsening condition of Plymouth's nightlife as I walked back.
As to today, there wasn't much to be done apart from prepping myself with last minute packing and checks to ensure I'd turned off all plugs and radiators, emptied my bin and cleared my floor before locking up and heading out. Only when I reached the station did I remember my slowly browning banana which I had intended to use in a sandwich (or eat before I left) and which was now still sitting in my cupboard to molder for three weeks. This led me to frantically message my halls Residence Assistant in the hopes that she was still around to fix my mistake (which luckily she was) so I could continue my 3 1/2 hour journey home colouring with a calm mind, interrupted only by the irritation of children being children...*sighs*
I did, however, realise [too late] that I'd been going through ticket barriers all wrong what with my immense load of luggage, which could be made easier by using the disabled gate, thereby preventing another ticket barrier tumble (like the one I suffered on my return from Christmas break). Observing this, I felt so much more in control and arrived home in good time. Sure feels good to be back, but it's not long until I'm off to Cervinia for skiing, snow and sweet times with my boyfriend! I'll probably see you then, if not before.

A Job Well Done [Enough]

So it's my penultimate night here in Plymouth before I head home for easter and ultimately Cervinia with my boyfriend - so exciting!
Today, however, has been kind of intensive what with trying to nail down a solid plan for my critical theory essay (which I'm proud to say I have managed). Bought myself a burrito at Bar Burritos on the Barbican when I got hungry before returning to finish my work.
I was faced for a moment with the task of more note typing but decided to call it quits, grab a cider and watch Breaking Bad (still intense) and eventually start packing around 10pm.
Now it's time to sleep......and enter another busy day using up the last of my perishable food, packing, doing laundry and library work, fetching foreign money, and attending a kickass gig! Gonna be awesome!

The Burlesque Glitter Theory

Continuing with the trend of Thursdays being the busiest but surprisingly the most enjoyable, today has for the most part not disappointed. First seminar on Freud - already enjoyed reading the theory, and was made even more engaging in class, especially when I got to bust out my Burlesque Glitter Theory! (being the relation between the endless meanings of a single dream and the endless appearance of glitter on/in and around a Burlesque dancer)
Due to the decline in the weather, I had to restrict my walk to inside Drake Circus and it didn't last too long either, but my chat with my Critical Theory tutor gave me a little more confidence for writing my essay.
Second class at 1 focused on two poems concerned with Sensibility (the topic of choice for my intro and annotated bibliography). Not as interesting as usual but still elicited a few laughs.
Curry awaited my appetite when I finally got back (after having many friends wish me a happy holiday) with which I was able to use up the last of my cauliflower and some other veggies (given I need to clear my fridge before I leave) and then work began....yes, it was slow and almost unendurable but I was practically finished for the night by 9 (aided along by chocolate - as I have been these last few nights). Was shocked by a violent cliffhanger in Breaking Bad too haha
Tomorrow I start the planning and packing and scanning and perhaps reward myself with sushi or a burrito! Wish me luck!

Brain Tumour Research Campus Colour Dash

I am genuinely quite tired having consumed an entire bottle of red wine with my flatmates' Easter Dinner (which by the way was delightful and delicious!)
But food aside (as much as I love it) the Colour Dash today was as to be expected: colourful! There were approximately 200 people present and we were split by letter into 14 groups up to M. These were set off to run the one-mile cross-campus course one after another. In the meantime, everyone else was throwing cups of powder paint over themselves and each other until the area just above the SU entrance was covered in shades of red, green, blue and orange! Some people even rolled on the ground to get extra colour! As I was group L, I was the penultimate team but it came around pretty quick so I was running with about 5-6 other people, getting a little tired out in places but it was a simple course past Portland Mews, then Rolle, Babbage and finally up past Roland Levinsky and the steps back to the SU, being dowsed with paint at intervals. My greatest coverage came just after the group shot at the end when a large bomb of red hit me on the shoulder! (Here's me in the aftermath).
But damn, so worth the £10 and the small fundraising goal. I was reading poetry after I showered (the first minute or two in the shower with the water coming off me completely red!) before going to the kitchen for socialising and eventually food and drunken card games!
Back to my last week of classes this month tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Mind-blown....in several ways

These last few days, it seems to be the trend for me to write an entry every other day. I don't think that trend will continue, especially in light of the fact that it's the Campus Colour Dash [ALREADY!] tomorrow, as well as the wonderful Flat Easter Dinner, so yeah it should be an interesting Sunday.
Today, however, I do believe I've learnt a few things.
1. Proofreading. I went to the Proprietary Library's Proofreading class - Level 2 (unable to attend level 1 because it's, strangely, happening after this one in the Easter holiday). However, I enjoyed it a fair deal, seeing first-hand what proofreading really involves. You have your proof, as it will be seen in the publication, and you check this against the copy to see if the wording, style and structure is consistent. Of course, there's the general spelling, punctuation, and grammar requirements too (which are a breeze for the most part). We went through horoscopes, poetry, recipes, and one short passage CRAMMED with spelling errors (a true dream in a twisted way haha). What with the inclusion of free coffee and cake, it was a well-spent 3 1/2 hours.
When I returned to my room, however, it was time to face the facts that I had real work to do in the shape of, you guessed it, more reading. This time it was Sigmund Freud - yes, the guy who proposed that every man wants to sleep with his mother - but the theory I was to concern myself with was to do with the interpretation of dreams. A small part of this led me to quite a quirky comparison with the art of Burlesque dancers.
Freud's theory states that the dream is composed of the content (the stuff you dream) and the thoughts (the unconscious origins/meaning of the dream). In interpreting a dream, these thoughts can never be fully uncovered; there will always be more. In much the same way, I was told by a friend who does Burlesque that the glitter some girls use can never be totally washed away, there is always more, even when you think you've got it all.
So yeah, tracing the origin of a dream is as impossible as removing burlesque glitter!
Comedy aside, this was perhaps the most enjoyable - and understandable - theory I have studied so far, and Mandy wasn't wrong when she said this course would alter my perspective of the world. Today alone, I've tackled Fetishism and Structuralism in general conversation! Also, had my first 'mind-blown-moment' when I realised that the origin of Fetishism (guys wishing women had penises) is probably why 'strap-ons' exist. Think about it...
As a respite from all this heavy thinking, I was able to do Facetime (Facebook's version of videocalling, I believe) to talk to Jackson who I am missing. Cannot wait to get home and then off to Cervinia, even if it means I've got to put in extra effort now to get my assignments prepared for the deadline which is right after I return to uni in mid-April!
But for now, I need my sleep so I am rested for tomorrow. I hope it goes well!

Baked Beans in a Paddling Pool - and - Easter Came Early

Well I can't believe I almost forgot to write here, given that today has been pretty sweet, despite the usual seminars of a Thursday.
I wasn't too sure if today was going to be as bearable (or fortunate) as it turned out to be. I'd already set my mind on going for a walk in the two hours between classes so once my first was finished at 11, I packed me a salad and headed down to the Barbican in the breezy sunshine. Look at that salad! Kale, spinach, chicken nuggets, Wensleydale cheese, and green olives. That is some healthy stuff right there!.....pity I let myself down tonight haha but more on that later. After enjoying lunch on the Mayflower Steps (or the site of the originals), I wandered on to the Hoe and further on round to the west side of Plymouth city centre, linking up places I already knew and essentially expanding my knowledge of the area. I aim to know this town really well by the end of the year [maybe].
Around 12.15, I was back in town and remembered I had committed myself to #SavetheCulture (an ongoing endeavour to share books with friends) so I dropped into a Waterstones, bought a copy of A Clockwork Orange. Luck came here in the form of £3.15 on my store card which allowed me to use the fiver in my wallet instead of my card. Then it was just a case of posting the book off and getting back to campus in time for my seminar at 1pm. On the way, I snagged a free piece of cinnamon pretzel and threw my remaining spare change at some people on campus raising money for Cancer Research (a charity I leap at when I see it because it means so much to me). I was offered the chance to throw baked beans at a girl in a paddling pool as part of the campaign but I was running late. In class, my friend Ben was presenting with two others on The Beggar's Opera. They had composed a short quiz at the end with an Easter egg as a prize (which I considered myself to have no chance of winning) until I realised that very few people got more than 3 of 8 questions right, guaranteeing me the egg (and this is the 'let down' I referred to earlier as after dinner tonight - delicious peanut, tuna and veg stir-fry), I unashamedly ate the entire thing!
The final thing for the night was a performance of Sweeney Todd at an on-campus lecture theatre which took up 2 1/2 hours of my night - and now, with another 9am class in the morning, I need to catch up on sleep, I believe.
It's been a better day for sure. I hope tomorrow can treat me just as nicely.

Need to get active...

So, update. Well I've had my week's lectures, I've finally finished the reading for Thursday, and I think I'm getting bed sores (or whatever u call the ache in ur lower back from laying/sitting for prolonged periods) from all of said reading. Upside? The weather is turning out perfect Spring time these last few days so my mood has improved on occasions.
There's a writing workshop with the INK team tomorrow so I'm going to that, and I might also stop by for the Women Writers Night at the Athenaeum. Got laundry and shopping to do too so busy day!
Been getting alot of Breaking Bad in too

A Child-eating Starfish

OK well I already know today is not going to be that eventful so I'll fill in the blank of the last few days for you.
Friday was a free day so I decided to go to the Plymouth National Marine Aquarium and it was really pretty. Saw loads of fishies (obviously) as well as jellyfish and sharks, rays, a turtle, starfish (including a huge plastic one on the wall which I was unsure if it wanted to eat the children who would sit beneath it or not), and many anemone and plants. But the majority of my missing days have been spent reading next week's course material and man oh man is it doing my head in!
Went out on Friday night with my flatmates (unsure if I was up for alcohol or loud club tunes though) while I stayed in last night with some Breaking Bad and a mug of tea.
Today however was DevCon! I got dressed up as Selene from Underworld (not that anyone knew who I was), bought a few things (anime coasters, plushie Minecraft Enderman, Studio Ghibli necklace, and a postcard), took some photos, and now I'm here, hungry after exhausting my mind reading Marx haha
See you tomorrow

A Literal Ray of Sunshine

I'll keep this short and simple as I've already stayed up too late playing Solitaire on my laptop. Today I've been in an unexplainably good mood, despite having had to endure a 2 hour seminar on the theory of language, followed by another 2 hour seminar on a text about a woman who disguises herself to maintain the interest of her lover (Fantomina, as I may have already mentioned). But with the texts for this week over with [for now], I have next week's texts to tackle - and as my friend Alicia would remark, I've prudently started reading some already! Tomorrow I will try to knock out the other critical text before starting on The Beggar's Opera at the weekend. Busy busy, huh.
Need to sleep though. Might go to the aquarium tomorrow actually. I'll let you know.

Our Regularly Scheduled Weather Programme

I think I'm starting to base whether I write here on what has happened and if it's significant. Well today has been one hell of a blustery one with trees being uprooted and a main road in town closed off when part of the main electronic screen was blown off....yeh it got pretty crazy and I was out in all that though I saw none of it (typical!)
I did, however, snag some sweet bargains on ski gear for my trip with my boyfriend Jackson at the end of the month. At least 25% off on everything: ski pants, thermal leggings, shirt, and socks, and all weather walking shoes! The only thing I paid full price for? £5 box of cookie dough poptarts!
But it's been a lazy day otherwise. Up until I had to cook some curry and go to a short performance entitled The Sand Dog Cometh, described as 'an homage to the avant garde and experimental, kitsch, academia, snobbery and trash tv'. I liked the delivery, very informal, mixed with video and contemporary dance and the ever present obscure messages.
But faced with a failed WiFi connection and a 9am class in the morning, I should probably get this day over with....at least I would if certain drunk and rowdy girls would just shut up!!

Death by Lecture

This post could've been a much later one but it's miserable and wet out, and I'd rather not be out there so Detention Night at the SU (as much as I love it) is going to have to happen without me....But hey, I've been to three already, plus I'm saving money.
Today though, has been composed of ups and downs, such as the slow loss of the human sales interaction, courtesy of the university box office no longer selling tickets - it's all online now. And my first ever pointlessly dull lecture
in which I genuinely could not see what value anything that was said might have. Upside? Look what was on the tables from a previous (and by the looks of it, more entertaining) lecture! I'm not sure under what circumstances this was necessary but it was hilarious all the same!
As to the other highlights, I was told by one of my tutors that I am doing very well (despite what I may be thinking about my grades) and that I may be set to try for getting firsts in 2nd year! I also might have been crawling and waving my legs in a vaguely sexy manner during my last burlesque class of the month.
It's a lovely community so I'm definitely going to join properly soon.
But now I recognise the need to be hitting the hay (or whatever idiom you prefer) so until next time!

Ain't Nothin' But a Head Cold

I must apologise for being absent since Thursday, but I will do my best to make amends. Friday was uneventful so I shall skip that. Saturday was the first workshop for the INK submissions, and as few people on the team were present, it was up to me to sift through about 30 poems and decide which ones should, or had the potential to be, published in the magazine. After that, I returned to my room with cake and coffee before getting down to reading another theory in my massive textbook, this time addressing the question of language and the fact that words essentially mean nothing (to put it plainly). This was taxing on my mind so I gave up eventually and watched some Breaking Bad.
Oh I forgot to mention, I got a cold that day so I was reading this heavy book with a heavy head (achy sinuses, drippy nose, you get the picture). I drank alot of tea, wore lots of layers, a scarf and a beanie hat with the heating on full to try and sweat it out. I think it worked somewhat though because I woke up feeling better-ish, enough to venture to Aldi for the weekly shop and then do my laundry while reading a rather racy 17th century short story called Fantomina.
Finished that in a couple of hours and somehow managed to polish off the previous day's [dreadful] theory article, leaving me free (or so I thought) to enjoy a night on Skype.....until the stupid WiFi in halls meant the connection kept cutting out so had to rely on a phone call.
But that relates to the wonder which I shall soon be experiencing at the end of this month which is skiing in Italy! It's going to be incredible! That is if I can survive the next 3 weeks of theory and prostitutes!

The Tail End of the Wave

Finally, reflective piece for Making Waves is done and submitted! But today hasn't been so easy, what with the start of the new modules. Critical Theory looks to want to screw with my mind in so many confusing ways, while Writing the Modern World is so far preoccupied with whores....
It's a whole other ball game all of a sudden!
But I'm just happy to be able to take things relatively slow again, even if that means still reading a shit ton of Bible-thin pages in a book thicker than the Yellow Pages.
I'm not here to rant, I'm just feeling a little out of sorts this evening, possibly because I've been watching Breaking Bad and things are starting to hit closer to home....
But I know I've got friends if I need them

No Rest for the Wicked

I am, admittedly, a little lost in the scheme of things. I've had an introductory lecture for both of my new modules and one - Critical Theory - is certainly a lot more daunting than the other - the second half of the Writing the Modern World module from before Christmas. What fortifies this belief is the MASSIVE heavy book I have to carry with me to each seminar, not to mention the length and complexity of this first piece of set reading.
But that aside, I've also been fighting my way through the reflective piece for the late Making Waves module - the wake of which I am still in evidently. I have over 1500 words done for tonight (half of which I wrote yesterday - I'm not that good) so now I simply (she says) have to look it over and edit it tomorrow, add the bibliography, attach the feedback form, and submit it before 3pm Friday. I can do this!
The prospect of my first 9am seminar since before Christmas, however, is not such a welcome thought, even if it's happening in the Robbins Conference Centre which takes less than a minute to get to.
I just need my rest, I think, especially after having the fire alarm go off AGAIN last night, at 12.30am no less! At least I remembered my wellies this time haha
Ok, I think I'll end this here. I have no more to say at the moment. I'll let you know how my seminars go tomorrow and such.
